How to identify misinformation
08.31.05 (11:30 am) [edit]

Does the story claim that vast, powerful, evil forces are secretly manipulating events? If so, this fits the profile of a conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theories are rarely true, even though they have great appeal and are often widely believed. In reality, events usually have much less exciting explanations.
The US military or intelligence community is a favorite villain in many conspiracy theories.

Out-of-body experiences probed
08.28.05 (11:05 am) [edit]
UK researchers are asking for your help to find out exactly what is behind out-of-body experiences (OBEs).
Psychologists at Manchester University have set up an online survey that they hope about 3,000 people will fill out.
By comparing the responses of those who have and have not had an OBE they aim to discover the overarching cause.

Panel calls for inspection of soldiers' "terrorist potential"
08.26.05 (6:50 am) [edit]
|
An Israel Defense Forces investigation into a shooting attack in Shfaram earlier this month, in which an IDF deserter shot dead four Israeli Arabs, called for the security forces to work together to identify soldiers with "terrorist potential."
The findings of investigative panel, headed by Brigadier General Ika Abarbanel, point to serious flaws in intelligence sharing both between internal IDF branches and security agencies.
The main conclusions reached by the panel were presented Thursday to IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz.
The committee proposed that a number of measures be adopted immediately to increase the likelihood of spotting potential terrorists.

Did a UFO destroy the Phobos 2 probe?
08.16.05 (5:24 pm) [edit]

Phobos, one of the two moons of Mars, has itself always been considered a rather mysterious object, as has its smaller twin, Deimos.
Joseph Shklovskii noted member of the Soviet Academy of science and co-writer with Dr Carl Sagan of "Intelligent life in the unverse," once calculated from the estimated density of the Martian atmosphere and the peculiar "acceleration" of Phobos, that the satellite must be hollow.
Could Phobos be a hollowed-out space station of huge proportions?

Russian researchers solve crop circles?
08.08.05 (5:50 pm) [edit]
A group of researchers in Russia claim they have solved the mystery of crop circles, the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reports. According to them, plants bend as a result of microwave emissions caused by lightning strikes.
The newspaper described an experiment conducted by researcher Stanislav Smirnov who placed several stalks of cereals in a microwave oven with a glass of water. He said the stalks bent in exactly the same way as those usually found at crop circles.

New airport scanners deliver electric shock
08.03.05 (6:12 am) [edit]

Patents filed by an Israeli inventor Amit Weisman and US company Yardeni Associates of Connecticut make scary reading for nervous travellers.
Airport security guards already use hand-held electromagnetic wands to detect metal hidden under clothing. The same wand can also sniff for traces of the gases some explosives emit into the air.
If the passenger is a suicide bomber who realises the wand has found something, the guard might not have enough time to pull out handcuffs or a gun. So the new wand will have a hidden secret –- a transformer which steps the detector’s battery power up to 100 kilovolts and feeds it to disguised metal electrodes at the end of the wand.
If the wand gives a silent warning of explosives, the guard can then subtly slide the pads onto the passenger’s neck or hands and press a shock button. The patent reassures that the effect is "temporary and reversible."
So an innocent traveller who "happened to have a significant amount of metal on his person or happened to treat explosives legally" should wake up shaken but unharmed.
